Kosal Bun
Kosal Bun is a retired 26-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and an active law enforcement officer with the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office. He is recognized for his expertise in operations, mental health crisis intervention, and leadership in diverse law enforcement roles. His career with the LAPD focused on patrol operations, gang and firearm suppression, undercover crime suppression, surveillance, crisis negotiation tactics, and mental health crisis response. Kosal also served as a Watch Commander and a supervisor in key operational assignments.
As a veteran investigator and supervisor within the Detective Support and Vice Division (DSVD) and Mental Evaluation Unit, Kosal led the Systemwide Mental Abuse Response Team (SMART), responding to crisis calls and providing expert support to patrol units across Los Angeles. He developed and implemented a crisis intervention approach that bridged mental health services and law enforcement systems throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Kosal has also trained both sworn and civilian personnel on mental health and crisis intervention techniques.
Kosal is a subject matter expert in Crisis Threat Assessment, Command and Control, Leadership Development, Field Operations during Critical Incidents, Surveillance, Crisis Negotiation Response, Mental Health Intervention, Workplace Violence, and Active Shooter Training and Response. He has been certified in court as a firearms expert and is knowledgeable in Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) laws.
His training includes Foreign Terrorism, Homemade Explosives Awareness, Recognition, and Response, Multi-Assault Counter-Terrorism Action Capability (MACTAC), and Immediate Action Rapid Deployment (IARD). Kosal holds Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced California Peace Officer Standards Training (POST) certificates. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Administration of Justice from California Coast University.
