Before joining the LAPD, Mike began his career as a Deputy Sheriff with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department (SBSD), where he worked in assignments such as custody, transportation, and Gang Task Forces.
During his LAPD tenure, Mike’s training and experience included Patrol, Metropolitan Division (Metro), Gang Units, Narcotics Units, Special Problems Units, and Bike Units, as well as serving as a Field Training Officer and Sergeant. His assignments at Metro included line platoons, the Archangel Task Force, and the Dignitary Protection Detail.
The Metro line platoons focused on crime suppression in high-crime areas, bank stakeouts, robbery details, undercover/plainclothes operations, mobile field force demonstrations, VIP protection, serving search warrants, and collaborating with detectives on high-profile investigations. As part of the Archangel Task Force, Mike contributed to strengthening Los Angeles’s infrastructure by developing security recommendations for the city, utility companies, and businesses. Within the Metro Dignitary Protection Detail, Mike helped safeguard the LAPD Chief of Police, the City of Los Angeles Mayor, and the Los Angeles City Attorney while working closely with agencies such as the U.S. Secret Service and the U.S. State Department.
In his later years with the LAPD, Mike served as Officer in Charge of the Transit Services Division Senior Lead Unit, where he supervised personnel and operations to ensure public transportation safety across Los Angeles. He also played a key role in training cadres across multiple divisions, specializing in tactics, mobile field force strategies, and shooting techniques.
Mike graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from Western Michigan University in 1990 and holds Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, and Supervisor California Peace Officer Standards Training (POST) certificates. He is a graduate of the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute (SLI) Class of 374 and has completed several specialized courses, including the California POST Dignitary Protection class, Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) school, and FEMA Incident Command System training from Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX).
Throughout his distinguished career, Mike earned numerous commendations, including a Police Meritorious Unit Citation for his work on a Gang/Narcotics Task Force, a Community Policing Medal with the Hollywood Gang Unit, and commendations for his contributions to Operation Archangel and the Transit Services Division.
