Nicholas "Nick" Milazzo

Special Weapons and Tactics Instructor

Nicholas “Nick” Milazzo is a 30-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), specializing in SWAT leadership, crisis negotiation, and advanced tactical operations. His extensive training and experience include patrol, gangs, narcotics, surveillance, undercover operations, counter-surveillance, K9 handling, and field supervision across diverse assignments, such as Metropolitan Division and geographic gang units. Nick currently serves as a Squad Leader within the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, providing leadership and supervisory oversight for incidents including armed barricaded suspects, suicidal individuals, hostage situations, and high-risk warrant services.

 On average, Nick manages approximately 150 SWAT deployments per year—75% of which are spontaneous and 25% preplanned. His role involves supervision and tactical command across all incidents, including managing personnel, overseeing equipment, and coordinating specialty cadres such as explosive breaching, defensive tactics (less-lethal and chemical agents), firearms training, and sniper operations.

 Nick is a recognized subject matter expert in Special Weapons and Tactics, Crisis Negotiation, Hostage Rescue, High Profile Dignitary Protection, K9 Operations and Deployment, and surveillance. He also provides administrative guidance and instruction to sworn personnel outside of the Metropolitan Division, teaching courses such as the Basic Supervisor Course, Communications Basic Course, and tactical training for geographic gang units.

 Nick has received numerous honors throughout his LAPD career, including the Meritorious Unit Citation (K9 Unit), Major Commendations, and over one hundred Minor Commendations. His teaching experiences include Basic and Advanced SWAT tactics, Crisis Negotiations, and de-escalation techniques throughout the United States and internationally.

 Nick holds Basic, Advanced, and Supervisory California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certificates. His completed accelerated law enforcement courses include SWAT Team Leader School (California Association of Tactical Officers, San Diego), POST Special Weapons and Tactics (Los Angeles Police Department), Crisis Negotiation School (Federal Bureau of Investigation, San Diego), Explosive Breaching School (Forced Entry Tactical Training, Los Angeles), and K9 Decoy School (Adlerhorst International, Riverside).
